In
the
past,
people
measured
wind
speed
with
the
Beaufort
Wind
Scale.
To
use
this
scale,
people
looked
at
how
the
wind
was
affecting
trees
or
other
objects
outside.
Then
they
compared
what
they
saw
to
the
descriptions
on
the
wind
scale.
Sir
Francis
Beaufort,
a
British
Admiral,
invented
this
scale
in
1805
for
sailors.
It
was
later
adapted
for
land
use.
