Chapter

2

Weight

How

much

does

that

rock

weigh?

The

weight

of

something

is

how

heavy

it

is.

Objects

have

weight

because

of

gravity.

Gravity

is

the

force

that

pulls

objects

down

toward

the

Earth’s

centre.

When

someone

steps

on

a

scale,

gravity

pulls

them

downward.

If

they

weigh

40

kilograms,

gravity

pulls

them

down

with

that

same

force

of

40

kilograms.

Astronauts

in

space

float

because

there

is

no

gravity

in

space.

This

means

there

is

no

force

pulling

down

on

them.
